More than 100,000 immigrants in the United States received welcome news Monday after President Donald Trump’s administration confirmed that they can remain in the country under temporary protections, avoiding the immediate threat of deportation.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that approximately 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese immigrants will retain their Temporary Protected Status (TPS), even though their existing protections were scheduled to expire on October 19.

The announcement provides immediate relief to thousands of families who had been facing uncertainty about their future in the United States.

What Did the Trump Administration Decide?

According to DHS, immigrants from Ukraine and Sudan who are currently covered by TPS will continue to receive protection from deportation while the federal government considers its next steps.

The department indicated that a formal announcement regarding their future status would come later.

However, officials have not specified how long the protections will remain in place or clarified the status of employment authorization documents.

Temporary Protected Status is a federal immigration program that allows eligible individuals from countries experiencing war, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions to remain in the United States temporarily.

A similar development occurred in September, when immigrants from El Salvador were allowed to retain their temporary protections.

The latest decision demonstrates that some humanitarian immigration protections remain in place despite the administration’s broader immigration crackdown.

What Happens Next?

For now, the affected immigrants can remain in the United States without the immediate threat of deportation under TPS.

However, the decision does not grant permanent residency, citizenship, or an automatic pathway to a green
