ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays are heading to the World Series after a thrilling 7–3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night, October 19, securing their third American League championship in franchise history.
Playing in front of more than 40,000 enthusiastic fans at Tropicana Field, the Rays delivered a memorable performance to win Game 6 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
The victory sends Tampa Bay to the World Series for the first time since 2020, where the team will face the Milwaukee Brewers in a historic championship matchup.
A Dramatic Night at Tropicana Field
The Rays entered Monday’s game with a 3–2 lead in the best-of-seven series, needing just one more victory to advance.
Tampa Bay wasted little time establishing control.
Richie Palacios delivered a two-run double in the second inning, giving the Rays an early advantage. Jonny DeLuca added another run with a sacrifice fly in the third, extending the lead to 3–0.
Cleveland responded in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to 3–1, but Tampa Bay’s offense was far from finished.
In the seventh inning, Junior Caminero hit a powerful two-run home run, sending the crowd into celebration and pushing the Rays ahead 5–1.
The Guardians refused to surrender.
Cleveland scored twice in the eighth inning, narrowing the score to 5–3 and loading the bases with an opportunity to take the lead.
However, Tampa Bay reliever Kevin Kelly struck out Brayan Rocchio to end the threat and preserve the advantage.
Moments later, Yandy Díaz delivered the decisive blow with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, restoring the Rays’ four-run lead.
Closer Bryan Baker finished the ninth inning, officially sending Tampa Bay to the World Series.
Freddy Peralta Named ALCS MVP
Pitcher Freddy Peralta played a crucial role in Tampa Bay’s championship-clinching victory.
He worked 5⅓ innings against Cleveland, allowing just one run while keeping the Guardians’ offense under control.
Peralta was named the American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player after an impressive performance throughout the series.
He allowed only one run across 12 innings during his ALCS appearances.
His contributions helped the Rays overcome a 2–1 series deficit and win three consecutive games to eliminate Cleveland.
A Historic Comeback for Tampa Bay
The victory carries special meaning for the Rays and their supporters.
Two years ago, Hurricane Milton severely damaged Tropicana Field, forcing the team to relocate its home games during the 2025 season.
After extensive repairs, the Rays returned to their longtime stadium in 2026.
Now, the same stadium has hosted one of the franchise’s most important victories.
Monday’s win also came exactly 18 years after Tampa Bay secured its first American League pennant on October 19, 2008.
The Rays previously reached the World Series in 2008 and 2020 but lost both championship series.
This year’s team now has an opportunity to accomplish something no previous Rays roster has achieved: bring a World Series championship to Tampa Bay.
Rays Will Face Milwaukee Brewers
Tampa Bay’s next challenge will be the Milwaukee Brewers, who advanced to the World Series after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
The matchup is particularly significant because neither franchise has ever won a World Series championship.
It will be the first World Series since 1980 featuring two teams both seeking their first title.
Milwaukee enters the championship series after winning 103 regular-season games, while Tampa Bay arrives with momentum following its comeback against Cleveland.
The Rays and Brewers will open the World Series on Friday, October 23, in Milwaukee.
World Series Schedule
Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time in Milwaukee.
Game 2 will take place Saturday, October 24, also in Milwaukee.
The series then moves to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg for Game 3 on Monday, October 26, and Game 4 on Tuesday, October 27.
Additional games will be played if necessary.
Can Tampa Bay Finally Win It All?
The Rays have already overcome significant challenges to reach baseball’s biggest stage.
From the destruction caused by Hurricane Milton to the team’s return to Tropicana Field, the journey has become an important chapter in Tampa Bay sports history.
Now, with powerful hitters such as Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz and strong pitching led by Freddy Peralta, the Rays are just four victories away from their first World Series title.
For fans across Tampa Bay and Florida, the celebration is only beginning.
The Tampa Bay Rays are American League champions. Their next goal is to become World Series champions for the first time in franchise history.
