World leaders have just wrapped up days of speeches, meetings and diplomatic discussions at the United Nations in New York, where peace and the world’s ongoing conflicts were among the central issues.
But just hours after the UN General Assembly’s general debate concluded, the war in Ukraine continued.
Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight Tuesday, damaging an educational facility, residential buildings and other infrastructure across the Ukrainian capital.
A missile hit an educational institution in Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi district, sparking a fire, according to city officials.
In the Holosiivskyi district, a residential building was also damaged. Emergency crews responded as residents were evacuated from affected areas.
Other strikes damaged a railway depot, data centers, businesses and additional infrastructure, Ukrainian officials said.
The latest attack came immediately after world leaders spent a week at the United Nations discussing some of the planet’s most serious crises, including the war in Ukraine and other ongoing conflicts.
The UN General Assembly’s 2026 general debate ran from Sept. 22 through Sept. 28, bringing heads of state and senior officials from around the world to New York.
Despite intensive diplomacy, no breakthrough was reached to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The contrast was stark: diplomatic meetings were ending in New York while missiles and drones were again flying over Kyiv.
Russia has continued near-daily attacks on Ukraine, while Ukraine has also carried out long-range strikes against targets inside Russia.
The latest violence underscores a difficult reality facing international diplomacy: world leaders may gather to discuss peace, but the wars continue on the ground.
