A high-speed pursuit on Interstate 4 turned into a large-scale search involving Florida Highway Patrol troopers, deputies, a helicopter and K-9 units Wednesday afternoon before authorities ultimately captured the driver at a Volusia County landfill.

Florida Highway Patrol identified the man as Akram Bin Ahmed, 45, of Winter Park. He was taken into custody and transported to the Volusia County Jail. Multiple charges are pending, according to FHP.

It started with an attempted traffic stop on I-4

According to FHP, the incident began Wednesday on eastbound I-4 near mile marker 123, north of DeLand.

A state trooper attempted to stop a black 2025 Buick Encore, but authorities say the driver refused to pull over.

Instead, the Buick accelerated and fled at a high rate of speed, triggering a pursuit along the interstate.

Authorities have not yet publicly explained why the trooper initially attempted to stop the vehicle.

Driver leaves I-4 and abandons the SUV

The pursuit continued east toward Daytona Beach.

According to investigators, the driver eventually exited I-4 at mile marker 129 near International Speedway Boulevard.

But the pursuit wasn’t over.

FHP says the driver abandoned the Buick and ran into nearby woods on foot. The vehicle was later towed from the scene.

At that point, what began as a traffic stop became a search operation.

Helicopter and K-9 teams join the search

Florida Highway Patrol requested assistance from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies deployed K-9 teams and a helicopter to search the area where the driver had disappeared.

During the initial search, authorities described the wanted driver as a man approximately 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 7 inches tall, with short hair and wearing a black shirt.

But the suspect apparently continued moving.

Search takes an unexpected turn

Investigators say the fleeing driver eventually made his way to a Volusia County landfill.

Then authorities received the break they needed.

Someone in the area reported seeing a “suspicious person” at the landfill. Law enforcement officers responded and detained the individual.

An FHP trooper subsequently identified him as the same driver who had allegedly fled from the traffic stop on I-4.

Authorities identified him as Akram Bin Ahmed of Winter Park.

The hours-long sequence that had started on one of Central Florida’s busiest highways was over.

Ahmed taken to jail

Ahmed was taken into custody and transported to the Volusia County Jail, FOX 35 reported.

FHP says multiple charges are pending, but authorities had not released the complete list of charges as of Wednesday evening. Investigators also have not publicly disclosed why Ahmed allegedly fled from the initial traffic stop.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.

No injuries were reported in the information released by authorities Wednesday afternoon.

The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against Ahmed have not been proven in court.
