As Hurricane Isaias moves toward the northern Gulf Coast, meteorologists are warning Florida residents about another potentially dangerous threat: tornadoes.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has identified portions of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend as areas where severe thunderstorms and tornadoes could develop late Friday, October 9, into early Saturday, October 10.
Which Florida areas are at risk?
Based on the latest forecast, communities that should pay particular attention include:
” Pensacola and surrounding Escambia County: Possible tornado-producing storms as the hurricane approaches the coast.
Fort Walton Beach, Destin and Okaloosa County: Potential severe thunderstorms and rotating storm cells.
Panama City and Bay County: Among the areas of concern as rainbands move inland.
Apalachicola and Franklin County: Possible tornado development in the eastern rainbands.
Tallahassee and surrounding communities: Tornado risk could increase Friday night into Saturday morning.
Florida’s Big Bend region: Conditions may become favorable for isolated tornadoes as the hurricane moves northward.”
Parts of southern Alabama and southwestern Georgia are also included in the broader severe-weather risk area.
Why do hurricanes produce tornadoes?
Hurricanes can generate tornadoes when their outer rainbands interact with changing wind speeds and directions near the ground.
These tornadoes can develop quickly, sometimes with limited warning, especially during nighttime hours.
What About Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa and Miami?
The highest forecast tornado concern is currently concentrated in northwest Florida.
Jacksonville is farther east of the primary risk area, while Orlando, Tampa and Miami are not included in the main tornado-risk zone identified in the current Storm Prediction Center outlook.
However, forecasts can change as the hurricane moves closer to land.
Residents urged to prepare
People in potentially affected areas should enable emergency weather alerts on their phones and identify a safe interior room on the lowest floor of their homes.
If a tornado warning is issued, residents should immediately move away from windows and seek shelter.
The National Weather Service will continue updating its forecasts as Hurricane Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast.
