A disturbing case stretching across Miami-Dade County ended with a 22-year-old man found shot to death more than 40 miles from the North Miami apartment complex where investigators say he was abducted.
Authorities identified the victim as Eddrick Bethune.
The case began shortly after midnight Sunday at the Aliro Apartments in the 14000 block of Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami.
Residents reported hearing numerous gunshots. Video from the apartment complex also captured two men jumping from a broken window and fleeing the scene.
Witnesses told investigators they saw two men wearing shirts marked “police” struggling with and beating a man before forcing him into the back seat of a vehicle.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed that the man described by those witnesses was Bethune.
Hours later, the investigation took a tragic turn.
A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office captain discovered Bethune unresponsive along a roadway in South Miami-Dade. Investigators said he had suffered gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives later located a vehicle matching the description of the one used by the abductors. The vehicle had been intentionally set on fire near the area where Bethune was found.
The killing has left residents of the North Miami apartment complex shaken.
Authorities have not announced any arrests, and investigators have not publicly disclosed a motive for the abduction and killing.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation and is asking anyone with information about the case to come forward.
