A Utah-based company has announced a nationwide recall of broccoli sprouting seeds after a supplier’s seed sample tested positive for Salmonella, raising food safety concerns for consumers who may have purchased the product online.
Gardeners Basics announced the recall on October 8, according to a notice published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The affected product is Gardeners Basics Waltham 29 Broccoli Sprouting Seeds, sold in one-pound, green-and-white resealable packages.
The seeds were distributed nationwide through online orders, including purchases made on Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, eBay, Etsy and the company’s own website.
Consumers can identify the recalled product by its UPC 848137042889 and the marking “Packed for 2027” on the package.
The company said its supplier notified it on September 26 that bulk seed lot W4105 had been recalled after Salmonella was detected in a sample analyzed by the FDA.
The contaminated seed lot has also been connected to a broader federal investigation involving broccoli sprouts and a multistate Salmonella outbreak.
According to the FDA’s October 7 update, the broader outbreak had resulted in 32 reported illnesses and three hospitalizations across six states, with no deaths reported. However, those cases have not been specifically attributed to the Gardeners Basics retail product.
Gardeners Basics said that, as of October 6, it had received no reports of illnesses associated with its recalled seeds.
Salmonella infections can cause diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe illness.
What Should Consumers Do?
Anyone who purchased the recalled seeds should stop using them immediately. The company advises customers not to eat the seeds or sprouts grown from them.
Affected seeds and sprouts should be sealed in a bag and discarded. Consumers can contact Gardeners Basics for assistance or a refund at [email protected] or 801-769-6181.
People experiencing symptoms after consuming potentially contaminated sprouts should contact a healthcare professional.
The recall is nationwide, meaning consumers in Florida and other states who ordered the affected product online should check their packages.
DUANEWS will continue monitoring FDA recall announcements and food safety alerts affecting American consumers.
