ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — October 12, 2026 — The Tampa Bay Rays have received disappointing news just hours before one of their biggest games of the season, as star pitcher Shane McClanahan has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 postseason.
Manager Kevin Cash confirmed Sunday that the 29-year-old left-hander will not return to the mound, even if Tampa Bay advances to the World Series.
McClanahan has been sidelined since September 3 after experiencing tightness in his left forearm during a game against the Texas Rangers.
The decision is particularly disappointing because McClanahan had made an impressive comeback this season after missing two years because of injuries and surgeries.
He finished the regular season with 10 wins, seven losses, a 3.36 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 118 innings.
Although Cash indicated that McClanahan is currently healthy, the organization decided that ending his season was the safest option considering his medical history and workload.
A Major Challenge Before the Championship Series
The timing could hardly be worse for Tampa Bay.
The Rays are preparing to face the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Monday night at Tropicana Field.
The best-of-seven series will determine which team advances to the World Series.
Tampa Bay will rely on Drew Rasmussen, who is scheduled to start Monday’s game after an outstanding regular season with a 2.67 ERA.
The Rays enter the series with an impressive 98-64 regular-season record and home-field advantage.
Despite McClanahan’s absence, Tampa Bay remains a strong contender. However, losing an experienced pitcher reduces the team’s options during a potentially lengthy championship series.
McClanahan is expected to remain with his teammates throughout the postseason, offering support as the Rays pursue their first World Series title.
Game 1 is scheduled for Monday, October 12, at 8 p.m. ET in St. Petersburg, Florida.
