A peaceful fishing trip turned into a deadly encounter in Central Florida after a 71-year-old man was attacked and killed by a massive alligator near Lake Apopka, according to reports from local authorities.

The victim, identified as Steven Hamilton, was fishing along the shoreline of Lake Apopka on Friday, October 16, when the attack occurred.

Authorities said the alligator involved measured nearly 12 feet long, making it an exceptionally large and dangerous animal.

Emergency responders were called to the area following reports of the attack. However, efforts to reach the victim were complicated by the presence of other alligators nearby.

Despite the emergency response, Hamilton did not survive.

Wildlife officials subsequently located and removed the alligator believed to have been responsible for the fatal attack. The animal was euthanized.

The tragedy has renewed attention to the dangers associated with Florida’s waterways, where alligators are commonly found in lakes, rivers, ponds and wetlands.

According to reports, this was the second fatal alligator attack recorded in Florida during 2026.

Although fatal encounters remain relatively rare, wildlife officials consistently warn residents and visitors to exercise caution near bodies of freshwater, particularly in areas where alligators may be present.

People fishing near shorelines are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid approaching alligators and never feed the animals.

Lake Apopka, located northwest of Orlando, is one of Central Florida’s largest lakes and is known for its extensive wildlife habitat.

The death of Hamilton serves as a tragic reminder that even familiar recreational areas can present unexpected dangers.
