FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — October 18, 2026 — Elijah Manley, a former Democratic congressional candidate in South Florida, has been arrested following allegations that he made violent threats on Facebook during a political dispute.

The 27-year-old, who previously ran for Florida’s 20th Congressional District, faces two felony counts of making written threats to kill or cause bodily harm.

What Led to His Arrest?

According to an arrest affidavit reported by NBC 6 South Florida, the investigation began after authorities received complaints about Facebook posts allegedly made by Manley in August.

Investigators said the posts appeared to be connected to a political disagreement involving support for Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon.

Some of the alleged messages contained violent language, including threats directed at individuals who did not support Nixon’s candidacy.

Two people reported feeling threatened by the posts and told investigators they feared for their safety.

What Did Manley Tell Investigators?

According to reports, Manley acknowledged that the statements were made during a political disagreement but maintained that he did not intend to carry out any threats.

Authorities nevertheless pursued criminal charges based on the alleged written statements.

Why Are Prosecutors Stepping Aside?

The Broward State Attorney’s Office requested that another prosecutor handle the case because of a potential conflict of interest.

The office explained that the alleged victims had previously participated in charitable activities connected to the State Attorney’s Office.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been asked to assign the prosecution to another jurisdiction.

What Happens Next?

Manley was released from jail Saturday after posting bond.

According to local reporting, his release conditions include restrictions on contacting the alleged victims, possessing firearms or ammunition, and using social media while the case proceeds.

Manley previously finished third in the Democratic primary for Florida’s 20th Congressional District.

The case now awaits further legal proceedings, including the assignment of a prosecutor.

Manley has not been convicted of any crime related to these allegations and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The arrest has drawn attention in South Florida because of the political nature of the alleged threats and the unusual decision by local prosecutors to step aside.
