Flávio Bolsonaro, a close political ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, finished first in the opening round of Brazil’s presidential election — but he has not won the presidency yet.
Bolsonaro, the 45-year-old son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, received 47.03% of the valid vote, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court.
Current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva finished second with 45.16%, leaving the two candidates separated by just over 2.2 million votes.
Because neither candidate received more than 50% of the valid vote, Brazil will hold a runoff election on October 25 to determine its next president.
Flávio Bolsonaro has aligned himself closely with Trump and his political movement. After Sunday’s result, Trump publicly celebrated Bolsonaro’s first-place finish, calling it a major victory.
For now, Bolsonaro can celebrate winning the first round — but the biggest battle is still ahead.
Brazil will choose its president on October 25.
