A powerful hurricane is threatening Mexico’s Pacific coast, bringing destructive winds, dangerous storm surges and the possibility of catastrophic flooding.
Hurricane Simon intensified rapidly into a Category 4 storm, reaching maximum sustained winds of 155 mph early Sunday, just 2 mph below the threshold for Category 5 status.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the storm remained extremely dangerous as it moved north-northwest along Mexico’s western coastline.
By 6 a.m. local time Sunday, Simon’s maximum sustained winds were estimated at 150 mph, with the hurricane’s center approximately 60 miles west of Manzanillo.
The popular tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta and surrounding coastal communities are among the areas facing serious threats.
Mexican authorities have ordered precautionary evacuations in vulnerable communities, suspended classes in parts of Jalisco and urged residents to remain away from beaches and flood-prone areas.
Forecasters warn that Simon could produce 10 to 20 inches of rainfall across portions of southwestern Mexico, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 30 inches.
Such extreme rainfall could trigger life-threatening flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions.
The storm’s slow movement near the coastline has increased concerns about prolonged exposure to powerful winds and heavy rainfall.
Although Simon’s center remained offshore Sunday morning, its strongest winds and rain were already affecting coastal communities.
Forecasters continue to monitor whether the hurricane will make landfall or remain just offshore.
Hurricane Simon is not currently forecast to strike Florida. The storm is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, while Florida is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Isaias in the Atlantic basin.
