A beloved Christmas tradition that has brought holiday magic to Tampa families for nearly three decades will not return this year.

The Chick-fil-A restaurant on Waters Avenue, famous for its spectacular Christmas light displays, has announced that it will not decorate its exterior for the 2026 holiday season.

For years, the restaurant has attracted visitors from across the Tampa Bay area with thousands of sparkling lights, animated decorations and festive displays.

But behind the holiday tradition was a family that dedicated months of work every year to making it possible.

Why Are the Christmas Lights Going Away?

Restaurant operator Jason Dittman explained that his family has decided to prioritize his father’s health.

The tradition began in 1997 with a small Christmas tree and a few decorations. Over time, it grew into an elaborate display involving three generations of the Dittman family.

Preparations often began as early as August, requiring months of work before the first lights were switched on.

This year, changing family circumstances have made continuing the project impossible.

Dittman’s sons now live in different states, and the family wants to spend more time together while supporting his father.

Tampa Residents React

The announcement has disappointed many residents who made visiting the decorated restaurant part of their annual Christmas celebrations.

Some families have visited the display for generations, returning each December to enjoy the lights with their children and grandchildren.

After the announcement, community members offered to volunteer their time and even help cover the costs of installing the decorations.

However, the Dittman family explained that the display has always been a personal family project and cannot easily be transferred to volunteers.

Despite the disappointment, many residents have expressed understanding and support for the family’s decision.

Will the Lights Ever Return?

For now, the famous Christmas display will not take place in 2026.

The family has not announced whether the tradition could return in a future holiday season.

Although the restaurant will look different this Christmas, the memories created over nearly 30 years will remain part of Tampa’s holiday history.

For many local families, the Chick-fil-A on Waters Avenue was more than a place to grab a meal during December. It was a destination where Christmas memories were made.
