Italy is preparing new measures that would ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs in schools and establish a maximum number of foreign students allowed in each classroom, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Sunday.
The government also plans to require parents of foreign students facing serious difficulties integrating into the Italian school system to learn Italian.
Meloni did not specify how many foreign students would be allowed in each class. The proposal still needs to go through the Italian government and parliament before it can become law.
According to Reuters, students without Italian citizenship currently account for about 11.6% of students enrolled in Italian schools.
