The Tampa Bay Rays could hardly have asked for a better start to their postseason series against the New York Yankees.
Behind a dominant performance from pitcher Drew Rasmussen, the Rays defeated New York 1–0 Saturday night at Tropicana Field, taking a 1–0 lead in the American League Division Series.
Rasmussen came close to making postseason history.
The Rays starter kept the Yankees without a hit for 7⅔ innings, striking out 10 and walking only two. New York’s Austin Wells finally ended the no-hit bid with a double in the eighth inning, but the excitement lasted only seconds.
Wells attempted to turn the double into a triple and was thrown out at third, immediately ending the inning.
That would be the Yankees’ only hit of the entire game.
Tampa Bay didn’t produce much offense either, but one swing was enough.
In the bottom of the third inning, Jonathan Aranda hit a solo home run off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, giving Tampa Bay the 1–0 advantage that would ultimately decide the game.
Cole allowed only one run and five hits over five innings, but with Rasmussen nearly untouchable on the other side, New York had no answer.
After Rasmussen completed eight scoreless innings, closer Bryan Baker took over in the ninth and retired the Yankees in order to secure the victory.
The win gives Tampa Bay an important early advantage in the best-of-five series and delivers a memorable playoff night to Rays fans at Tropicana Field.
For the Yankees, the challenge is now clear: find a way to wake up an offense that entered the series with momentum but managed only one hit Saturday night.
Game 2 is scheduled for Monday night in St. Petersburg.
The Rays struck first. Now New York has to respond.
