Jacksonville is waking up Monday morning after a violent weekend that saw police respond to five separate shootings across the city, along with the death of a man found inside a vehicle.
The incidents happened between Saturday night and Sunday, sending Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue crews to multiple neighborhoods.
Altogether, seven people were reported shot or dead across the separate incidents.
The violence began Saturday night at the Monaco Arms Apartments.
Police said two young men arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds after a confrontation at the apartment complex turned into a fight and gunfire. One was shot in the shoulder and abdomen, while the other suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Both were reported in stable condition.
Hours later, shortly after midnight Sunday, another man was shot in the leg on Ken Knight Drive East. Police said the victim had been arguing with someone he knew when the person pulled out a gun and opened fire. A suspect was detained.
Less than an hour later, officers responded to another shooting at The Edge at Town Center Apartments near St. Johns Bluff Road South.
Investigators said an argument inside an apartment ended with a man in his 40s being shot in the leg. A woman was taken into custody for questioning, and police said the incident appeared to be isolated.
Then, around 3:17 a.m., another shooting was reported on Cumberland Cove Court.
According to investigators, that incident began with a dispute at a restaurant in St. Johns County. Police said the suspect followed the victim back to his Jacksonville home and fired several shots, hitting the man in the hip.
The suspect was later taken into custody.
The violence continued Sunday morning.
Shortly after 11 a.m., a man in his early 30s was discovered suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a vehicle that had crashed on McDuff Avenue North.
Investigators determined that the shooting itself happened nearby on Spring Street. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical but stable condition. Police had not released a suspect description as of Monday morning.
Then, Sunday afternoon, authorities responded to Stafford Road, where an adult man was found dead inside a vehicle in front of a home.
Police have not publicly identified the man, and investigators said the manner of death remained pending.
The incidents happened in different parts of Jacksonville and police have not indicated that the shootings are connected.
Authorities have detained or arrested suspects in three of the shooting investigations, while detectives continue working to identify suspects in the remaining cases.
Five separate shootings in a single weekend have now left Jacksonville residents with an unsettling question as a new week begins: What is happening with gun violence in the city?
The investigations remain active, and additional information could be released as detectives continue reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses and searching for surveillance video.
