The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday, October 9, near Broward Road and Interstate Center Drive, not far from Interstate 95.

When officers arrived, they discovered a man lying on the ground with gunshot injuries. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Authorities described the victim as a man believed to be in his 40s. His identity has not been publicly released in the latest report.

Detectives worked through the night

According to investigators, detectives spent several hours interviewing witnesses, reviewing evidence and executing search warrants as they worked to identify the person responsible.

Their investigation led them to Carter, who was arrested the following day.

He now faces charges of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Carter is being held at the Duval County jail.

Court records cited by Action News Jax indicate that Carter had previously been convicted of attempted murder in 2014.

Police have not publicly explained what led to Friday’s shooting or whether the suspect and victim knew each other.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the victim’s family as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The charges against Carter are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The investigation remains ongoing.
