Consumers in Florida and five other states are being warned about a recall involving smoked seafood products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium capable of causing serious and sometimes life-threatening infections.

Starfish Seafood has announced a voluntary recall of its Trio Cold Smoked Salmon, Halibut and Trout, sold in 8-ounce packages, following concerns about possible bacterial contamination.

The affected seafood was distributed in Florida, Georgia, New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina, raising concerns that some packages may still be stored in consumers’ refrigerators.

How to identify the recalled product

According to the recall information, the affected product carries the following identification details:

  • Brand: Starfish Seafood
  • Product: Trio Cold Smoked Salmon, Halibut and Trout
  • Package size: 8 oz (227 g)
  • Lot number: D139149161-153
  • Expiration date: December 1, 2027
  • Recall announcement: October 9, 2026

Why is Listeria dangerous?

Listeria infection can cause fever, muscle aches, nausea and gastrointestinal symptoms. In more serious cases, the bacteria can spread beyond the digestive system and lead to severe complications.

Pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face particularly high risks. During pregnancy, infection can also cause miscarriage, stillbirth or serious illness in newborns.

What should consumers do?

Consumers who purchased the affected smoked seafood should not eat it, even if it looks and smells normal.

The recalled product should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming the seafood should contact a healthcare professional.

The recall is voluntary, and no illnesses had been reported in connection with the product at the time of the announcement.

For Florida residents, the warning serves as a reminder to check refrigerated seafood products carefully, particularly those with extended expiration dates.

DUANEWS will continue monitoring FDA food safety alerts and recalls affecting Florida consumers.
