October 12, 2026 — Florida’s Attorney General is preparing to investigate a major school district following allegations of irregularities involving multimillion-dollar technology contracts intended to provide laptops to thousands of students.
The investigation will focus on Broward County Public Schools, one of Florida’s largest school districts, after an official report raised serious concerns about how contracts were handled and whether procurement procedures were properly followed.
According to WLRN Public Media, Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office announced plans to examine the district’s handling of laptop-related contracts following findings released by the Broward Office of Inspector General.
Questions Surround Thousands of Student Laptops
The controversy centers on a purchasing process involving approximately 80,000 laptops intended for students across Broward County.
An Inspector General report released on September 30 identified problems with the district’s procurement process, including misleading information provided to school board members and concerns about attempts to influence contract awards.
Investigators also raised questions about the actions of a former district official and a private businessman who allegedly attempted to steer a contract toward a particular company.
The report included allegations that the businessman submitted falsified documentation during the bidding process.
One of the contracts examined involved distribution services valued at approximately $540,625 annually.
However, the report did not establish that all individuals involved had committed criminal offenses. The allegations and findings remain subject to further review.
School Employees Could Face Termination
The controversy has already prompted potential disciplinary action.
According to CBS Miami, Broward Schools Superintendent Howard Hepburn announced plans to recommend the termination of two district employees following the Inspector General’s findings.
The proposed dismissals reflect growing concerns about accountability and oversight within the school district.
State Investigation Could Bring Further Scrutiny
The Attorney General’s involvement could expand the examination of how public education funds were managed and whether state laws were violated.
The case raises broader questions about transparency in government contracting, particularly when millions of taxpayer dollars are involved.
For parents and taxpayers, the central concern is whether funds intended to support students were managed fairly and responsibly.
As of the latest reports, the Attorney General’s Office had announced plans to investigate, but no final criminal findings had been reported.
The district could face additional scrutiny as state authorities review the findings and determine whether further action is warranted.
