A major air traffic disruption is causing widespread flight delays and cancellations across the United States, with six Jacksonville flights canceled amid an FAA equipment outage affecting several major airports in the Northeast.
According to FlightAware, more than 4,400 flights have been delayed and nearly 640 flights have been canceled within, into, or out of the United States.
The six canceled Jacksonville flights are connected to Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport, two of the airports most affected by the disruption.
The FAA said a fiber-optic cable was accidentally cut at a construction site in New Jersey, disrupting a Philadelphia tower responsible for radar approach and air traffic control operations.
The outage prompted the FAA to impose temporary ground stops at five major airports: Philadelphia, Newark, Teterboro, LaGuardia, and John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Philadelphia has been among the hardest-hit airports, with delays averaging around three and a half hours.
Travelers flying from Jacksonville through Newark or Philadelphia are advised to check their flight status with their airline before heading to the airport, as delays and cancellations may continue.
