The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a new area in the Gulf for possible tropical development over the coming days.

According to the NHC’s Sunday morning update, a broad area of low pressure could form over the southwestern Gulf within the next few days.

Forecasters say the system could then slowly develop as it drifts northward over the southwestern Gulf.

The NHC currently gives the system a near 0% chance of formation during the next 48 hours, but a 30% chance over the next seven days.

Thunderstorms and tropical moisture are already present across portions of the Gulf and around the Bay of Campeche.

At this stage, there is no named storm and no hurricane or tropical storm warning for Florida associated with this system. It is still too early to determine where the disturbance could eventually move or whether it will organize into a tropical depression or storm.

With hurricane season continuing through November 30, residents along the Gulf Coast should continue monitoring official forecasts as conditions develop.
